This AM, I checked for Windows Updates. The display listed an optional one: 'Cypress - Other hardware - Cypress AT2 USB Storage Adapter' I installed it, apparently successfully. But then I tried one of my desktop shortcuts to work on a document, and got an error message to the effect that the drive ID ('P') is no longer valid. I checked my desktop shortcut to that drive and got the same error msg. I went to Windows Explorer and discovered that while drive 'C' (named 'Primary') is OK, the secondary ('P', where all my real work is stored) has disappeared.

The drive letters jump from 'O' (an 8 GB USB compact flash drive) to 'Q' (a 1000 GB drive for backups of 'P') I rebooted with no result; 'P' is still MIA. I checked installed updates; by eight-clicking on the 'Cypress' update, I got this information: ********************************************************************************* Cypress - Other hardware - Cypress AT2 USB Storage Adapter Installation date: 3/26/14 10:54 AM Installation status: Successful Update type: Optional Cypress Other hardware software update released in March, 2014 More information: Help and Support: ********************************************************************************* What on earth is wrong here? (An oddity is that while 'P' has disappeared from Win Explorer, Q' is alive and well. Both drives are USB externals) P.S. - My current email is *** Email address is removed for privacy *** - Apparently, MS Answers still has my old address. I have the same problem.
I had a working USB Drive, the Windows Update hit 3/24/14 and the drive was not recognized by Windows after that. I am posted on the Technet Windows 8.1 forum (URL below).
I have been on a chat with MS support for hours now while they did remote access to my system. I have been told they want $99 to fix my system with their tools. You can find the driver pkg here. Refer to CustomizingVID_PID.pdf in this package and follow step by step methods explained there to install the relevant drivers for the corresponding ATA/ATAPI device. ******* None of this make any sense whatever. I tried the link the links to Cypress and Howtogeek.
The Cypress link is pure technogibberish, and the Howtogeek site leads to a download link the doesn't work. Can anybody tell me in plain English how to fix this problem? The Cypress update seems to be the source; I installed it because it was listed by the 'Windows Update' component of the Win7 Control Panel.
One other oddity is that the procedure for UNINSTALLING updates won't work in this situation. In fact, the Cypress update doesn't even show up in the list of updates. Either somebody (Cypress or Microsoft) has screwed the pooch here or some SOB has sneaked a virus into the update. And can somebody in charge remove my old e-mail? It was, but now it's.
I don't know what link you are referring to in the How To Geek Article which shows step by step directions on locating/naming a drive Did you look for the Cypress Update in Control Panel > Uninstall Programs? Sometimes drivers do show up there.
The gibberish page described the drivers in the package. The link to the download was at the bottom of the page. There is a USB Serial Windows USB Class Drive download listed in USB section: More Drivers The ones I see listed above appear to be for Windows XP. You can check Microsoft Update Catalog for a Windows 7 driver. As for the email issue are you referring to the email address you're using to receive notifications from Microsoft Community? You can change that by clicking on your User Name, JCGiglio and clicking Edit Profile. Scroll down to Private Information and enter the email address you wish to use.
