Developing Web-enabled Decision Support Systems Solutions Manual
Full course description With the increasing amount of data available within organizations, firms and managers are faced with the task of creating insights from these new and increasing sources of data. To make these insights accessible to end-users, firms have developed and used decision support systems (DSS) that aim to unlock data-driven insights for the use in day-to-day decision making. In general, DSS are software solutions that seek to combine data with analytical models in order to analyse these data and guide managerial decision making. This way, they create value for the firm.

In this course we focus on developing DSS by combining data available to modern firms (i.e. Both classical data as well as newer data sources such as online and text data) with analytical techniques to analyse these data. In particular the focus will lie on developing models appropriate for the data at hand, and interpreting the results from these analyses in order to base decisions on. As such, this course builds on and extends courses such as Business Analytics and Descriptive and Predictive Analytics.
Course objectives After this course, students: • Are able to translate a managerial problem into a research plan that includes suitable data and analysis choices • Are able to interpret the results of the research, and can translate these into managerial recommendations • Have become familiar with a variety of commonly encountered data types • Are able to perform advanced summative analysis on data encountered • Can identify suitable methods to analyse common data types encountered in firms • Are able to develop their own models based on the learned methods and the available data.
Using VB.NET and ASP.NET by and, Belmont, Massachusetts, 2007 ISBN: 0-9759146-4-2 Decision support systems combine models, data, and information technology tools for effective decision-making and are becoming increasingly popular in business and industry. Developing Web-Enabled Decision Support Systems is a comprehensive book that describes how to build data-driven, Web-enabled decision support systems using a Microsoft Access database, VB.NET, and ASP.NET framework and illustrates it using several case studies arising in Management, Industrial Engineering, and Operations Research. The main contribution of the book is to present all the techniques needed to build complete decision support systems in a highly accessible manner through numerous hands-on tutorials and case studies. This book is ideally suited as a textbook for teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in any branch of science, engineering, and management but can also be used as a supplementary reference book or a self-study manual. The book is composed of the following five parts. Part I - Principles of Good Database Design: This part of the book covers entity-relationship diagrams, creating relational databases, and normalizing databases. Part II - Database Development with Microsoft Access: This part describes how to create tables using Microsoft Access, establish relationships between tables, and manipulate tables using Access queries or using Structured Query Language (SQL).
