Don’t go away! I work in a call center for software tech support. When I began to get a pain in my right shoulder from all of the typing that I do all day I started looking for an ergonomic keyboard to see if that would solve my problem. In the course of my search I came across an article that claimed that the space taken up by some of the commands and numeric keypads buttons on the right side of full size keyboards made them so wide that they forced you to place your mouse way out to the side. For I then realized that my full size keyboard was not only forcing me to reach waaay out to the side to use my mouse but also that I hardly ever used the numeric keypad in my work at all. Therefore, I figured that if I switched to a ten keyless keyboard I would not have to reach so far to the right to use the mouse and then maybe, just maybe my shoulder pain would subside.
To try out my theory, I selected the Genius mini keyboard not only because it had a lot of favorable reviews but also because the spacing and layout of its buttons resembled quite closely that of a full size keyboard. For instance, if you will look at a full size keyboard you will note that the space bar lies just below the letters C and M and if you will look at the Genius you will note that the spacing is pretty much the same.
In addition to that, the Genius has full size up and down buttons (which I do use in my job) while those buttons in other mini keyboards are pretty small and - in some cases- you have to press a function key (FN) first to make them work. A few reviewers said that the keys were kind of hard to push but I did not find them to be any harder to push than the keys in my standard OEM issue full size keyboard. Nor did I find the keys to be any noisier than the keys in my full size keyboard. Well, I took the Genius mini keyboard to work and guess what? It did relieve the pain in my shoulder by allowing me to place the mouse closer to the keyboard and making it more comfortable to use so I am glad that I made the purchase!
I was looking for a small keyboard that would avoid dust collection, and this one's construction definitely prevents the keys from becoming nonfunctional due to dust. The keyboard is compact, because it does not have separate keys for the numeric keypad.
The keyboard arrived, and after plugging it into a Macintosh computer, there were no major difficulties with usual keyboard functioning. There was some difficulty with getting the NumLk key to work with the Macintosh computer I was using, and I have not yet found a solution to this issue, so I have not been able to use the numeric keypad keys that coincide with u i o j k l m,.
The instructions do not indicate how to operate the keyboard with a Macintosh, but I suspect that there is a key-sequence, or Macintosh keyboard driver update, that will allow a Macintosh to recognize the NumLk sequence from this keyboard. For those who like keyboard integration issues, feel free to purchase, and locate the appropriate driver solution, and then let Genius know. As the keyboard is labeled with Windows keys, Macintosh users will have to get used to using Ctrl, Alt, and Windows keys for the equivalent Cmd, Opt and Apple keys.
The particular keyboard I received had two minor problems: the body was slightly warped, and the backslash key was somewhat sticky. The problems weren't big enough for me to return the keyboard. I added some tape to the bottom of the keyboard, to keep prevent wobbling while typing.
